Dub Review Vox Box
This is the transcript of the Vox Box Chat of June 15th, 2003.
* SpaceButler has joined #dubreview
[SpaceButler:#dubreview PING]
Kiggy: PONG!
Nijhazer: DAMN YOU SPACE BUTLER!
AllenDivers: pack
AllenDivers: their so cute!
AllenDivers: they're even
SpaceButler: Ah, Nabeshin, my old friend...
AllenDivers: always a good way to start up a
chat
* SpaceButler has quit IRC (Quit: Peace and
Protection 4.22)
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'OK, chat's on'
AllenDivers: all right, I'll try to hang
around until JK shows up
* Arcturus will probably be distracted during
this chat
Geoduck: Rest of us = chopped liver
Nijhazer: Yes, you are all chopped liver
Arcturus: Well, Geoduck is, at least.
AllenDivers: Kyle might not be here since
its his birthday this weekend and he's
having dinner with his family
Otakuman: Why arc?
AllenDivers: not so much that, I've just
been cutting out early and missing out on
the rest of the chat
Arcturus: Clark was trying to get Dave
Mallow's IRC client working.
Geoduck: Am I liver? Wurst you've ever seen.
* Arcturus groans
Arcturus: Whether or not he was succesful -
we'll find out tonight, I suppose.
Otakuman: Dave Mallow The VA?
Nijhazer: No, Dave Mallow the periodontist.
* Shinobi has joined #dubreview
Geoduck: So what WERE Slavik's plans? And
how were they ruined?
Slavik_CC: yep
* SpaceDrake has joined #dubreview
Nijhazer: Welcome back, you guys.
SpaceDrake: I am the return.
AllenDivers: ack, not that again
Shinobi: Hey guys!
Slavik_CC: my original plans to rule the
world.
AllenDivers: yo
Otakuman: Hey shin
SpaceDrake: Alright, so where's the action?
Nijhazer: Action? Oh right, a topic.
Arcturus: I was foiled in my plans to rule
the world.
Arcturus: I should have given it a more
subtle name than "Operation Robot Holocaust"
SpaceDrake: Mmmph. Problem is my most recent
anime purchase was the last disc of
Hellsing.
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'Conventions in
need of attention'
Geoduck: Action? But of course. Time for the
Earwig Marathon!
SpaceDrake: Not exactly topical.
SpaceDrake: Good as anything but not exactly
topical.
Nijhazer: OK, so here's the deal...
Nijhazer: This week we learned that a lot of
prominent Los Angeles area VAs will be
attending Anime Expo.
Otakuman: Yup
Kiggy: and?
Nijhazer: This is not surprising... Anime
Expo is close to LA and is one of the
biggest conventions in the nation.
Shinobi: yes
AllenDivers: of course, as it doesn't cost
anything to let them come
AllenDivers: since you don't need to comp a
room for them
Shinobi: ture ture
Nijhazer: On the other hand, as I understand
it, AX is not very friendly towards
American dub personnel. I've heard some
unpleasant stories from VAs who have
attended.
Otakuman: Nijh: oh??
Shinobi: As have I Nij
Slavik_CC: wow, really?
Kiggy: not good
Geoduck: Well, I don't think AX ever invited
American VAs as "Guests of Honor". Unlike
EVERY other convention.
AllenDivers: american guests are often
secondary to the japanese guests at anime
expo
Otakuman: Any stories Nijh?
Otakuman: Hehe
Kiggy: spill the beans
Kiggy: ooooh that coffee is kiccking in!!!!!
Nijhazer: Wendee Lee passed on quite a few,
for example, but if you don't mind I won't
disclose those...
Shinobi: Yes, one VA(name withheld to
protect the not-so-innocent) I talked to
was told don't bother to come. (that's the
polite version)
* Kiggy is now known as KigBuzzed
KigBuzzed: bzzzzzzzzz
AllenDivers: most stories I've heard is
american guests simply don't get the
attention and if they try to get in, they
are often given the run-around
KigBuzzed: shoot
KigBuzzed: that Sux
Otakuman: Wendee Did mentioned to me that AX
doesnt want VAS
Shinobi: Allen has it about right. from what
I've heard anyway
Otakuman: Allen: I see
SpaceDrake: But speaking of VAs and cons,
any word on Otakon attendance?
KigBuzzed: I've heard from other sources
that AX's managers are pretty F.U. people
Otakuman: Jonny Yong Bosch is going to Otakon
KigBuzzed: I went to Akon and hopefully
weill go to Ushicon
Arcturus: Johnny's a cool guy.
* KigBuzzed is now known as KigReadingLJ
KigReadingLJ: bbiab
Nijhazer: Well, actually, what I was hoping
you guys could tell me is... Anime Expo is
huge. It's also in California. So a lot of
studios expect the biggest publicity by
sending their folks there. Yet for the dub
folks, it's not such a good experience, and
sending them only to that one gives a bad
impression.
AllenDivers: I hit akon, and will be going
to anime expo
Shinobi: Otakon? Is that the con that some
of the VAs for RahXephon si going to have
a commentary/screening of the show?
Otakuman: AX, San Diego Comic Con,&
Ani-Magic are 3 cons im going this year
AllenDivers: yep, absolutley.. you also need
to realize the more vocal "hardcore" fans
are there and give all the attention to the
japanese guests
Nijhazer: A few industry folks mentioned to
me that they feel part of the reason they
don't get much attention in the anime
"press", as you will, is because of how
Anime Expo treats them.
Otakuman: Yeah i heard lotsa horror stories
about the AX Staff
Shinobi: That's an interesting theroy Nij
SpaceDrake: Pfff.
Nijhazer: What are other good conventions
that need more attention from the dub crews
of the U.S.?
SpaceDrake: OTAKON
Arcturus: SakuraCon!
Arcturus: Even though it's not until April
of next year...
SpaceDrake: Otakon is the big Anime con of
the east coast.
AllenDivers: are you asking what other cons
treat dub guys rough?
AllenDivers: BAAF is a bit bigger than Otakon
Shinobi: all the cons I've been to seemed to
like their dub guest
SpaceDrake: And I do mean BIG. We fvsking
hijack Baltimore each year for that shiznit
Shinobi: that's only in Texas though
Otakuman: Theres a con in Las Vegas in 2004
i might go
Nijhazer: Actually I'm asking this...
Nijhazer: There are a lot of industry
personnel attending Anime Expo that are not
seen anywhere else.
Nijhazer: Steve Blum's going to be there,
for example.
KigReadingLJ: ONICON! October 2004 in
HOUSTON!!!!
SpaceDrake: Send them to Otakon, damn it.
Otakuman: I know Eric Sherman is gonna be at
AX
* Raptor has joined #dubreview
* Arxane has joined #dubreview
KigReadingLJ: http://www.oni-con.com/
Otakuman: Bang Zoom Head Honcho
Nijhazer: If all that attention could be
directed towards another convention that
would be more understanding of the dub
sector... what would be a good pick?
SpaceDrake: Most of the anime fans on the
east coast attend that muther, with more
each year.
SpaceDrake: Can't say much about the
staff... but it's worth a look at least.
It's big enough.
Otakuman: Nijh: I say Ani-Magic or Fanime Con
Shinobi: Well Nij I'd guess A-Cen or even
A-kon
AllenDivers: Well, something centralized
would be good.. it would need to be a con
easy for people to get to
Geoduck: Just about every con besides AX
*loves* to have dub actors as Guests of
Honor
* Arcturus sets mode: +o Arxane
Otakuman: You know never mind about FC, I
heard Horror Stories anout the way FC Staff
Treated the VAS last year
SpaceDrake: I also want to say Katsucon...
but that's pretty small time. It's like
Otakon Lite.
AllenDivers: Akon has a few logistics
problems, but does do a good job with the
dub guests.. they had a ton of VA panels at
the con
Nijhazer: Akon is a good pick in my opinion
as well...
KigReadingLJ: yes it is
SpaceDrake: Where is A-kon held?
Otakuman: Ax Has only 2 Dub Panels this yeat
AllenDivers: akon is in dallas
Nijhazer: Like you said, it's centralized,
and the folks behind the scenes have been
doing it for awhile.
Otakuman: Allen: Akon04 is moving into new
Downtown Dalas Hotel from what i read
Shinobi: Exactlly whuyy I suggested A-kon
Nijhazer: I don't think it hurts that FUNimation and ADV
are in the same state, but regardless, they do have
plenty of dub action going on there already.
AllenDivers: 14 years of akon.. they know a bit, but
still act a bit amatuerish at times.. their press stuff
really is not organized.. if they could clean that up
they could get a ton more publicity
Shinobi: Yeah, A-kon does need to get their staff wipped
into shape
Shinobi: espeacilly considering their history
AllenDivers: houston will be having 2 conventions in the
coming year.. oni-con and kamikazecon.. more than likely
they will end up with one, but these 2 have the
potential to be big, especially if they can get adv and
funi behind them
Otakuman: I knowADV is HUGE sponsor of AX
Shinobi: I got a question about Oni-kon, is happening
this year or next?
SpaceDrake: I still say if these people want East Coast
exposure hitting Otakon would not be a bad way to start
at all.
AllenDivers: I've spoken with staff from both of them and
have offered to help with publicity
Shinobi: What'd they say Allen?
AllenDivers: the other thing you need to think about is
the fact that these conventions are paying for the
guests.. so they are often careful about who they pick..
smaller cons can't afford to bring in a lot of big names
* SpaceDrake starts wondering if everyone has him on ignore
Otakuman: Man they wasnt kiddin when they say Melissa
Fahn is HAWT
Shinobi: Spacedrake: when'd you get here? :)
AllenDivers: kamikazecon wants me to make connections for
them, and have approached me about other plans.. the
folks at oni-con and I are still talking, nothing
settled yet
SpaceDrake: True, that's why I didn't mention Katsucon.
Great staff but waaaay too small time.
Otakuman: Allen: true
* KigReadingLJ mentions Onicon again ;)
Nijhazer: Where is Onicon anyway?
AllenDivers: Kig: you know the folks at onicon?
SpaceDrake: 9:07. You know, I'm the one who's been
ranting about Otakon for the last 15 minutes
Shinobi: What other big east cost cons are there?
Arxane: All this talk about cons and I haven't even been
to one
AllenDivers: onicon will be in houston
KigReadingLJ: Debuts October 2004 in Houston
Arxane: I gotta get out more
* KigReadingLJ signs up for Onicon Staff as he lives in
Houston
Nijhazer: SD: I've never been to Otakon; can't say much
about it.
AllenDivers: its nice to see more cons popping up in the
area
KigReadingLJ: Texas will have 4 anime cons
SpaceDrake: Ditto. I'm working more off of the
testimonials of people who HAVE been there.
SpaceDrake: And I know quite a few people who have.
AllenDivers: I'll probably be hitting animefest in
houston.. if I have any money after ax
KigReadingLJ: Akon, Ushicon, AnimeFest and onicon
Shinobi: Anime Boston was pretty big for its first year.
why not that one?
KigReadingLJ: um animefest is inDFW
Otakuman: My buddy has gone to otakon last year its good
but the Baltimore area is way spaced out
SpaceDrake: It IS the biggest anime con of the East
Coast, though, I know that much for fact.
AllenDivers: yeah, kig, I know
Nijhazer: Anime Boston is pretty far from the west coast,
which is where a lot of dubbing studios are located.
KigReadingLJ: do
SpaceDrake: "Way spaced out"? Would you mind elaborating?
KigReadingLJ: do;'h
KigReadingLJ: what about AWA?
AllenDivers: spacedrake, you're forgetting BAAF
KigReadingLJ: BAMF?
SpaceDrake: Nij, here's the thing though: the East Coast
is the other major population center of the U.S.
Shinobi: I hear ya Nij, but they had a lot of dub guest.
Might be worth a shot.
Otakuman: No like the hotels in the area
SpaceDrake: Exposure on this side of the Rockies = good
thing
SpaceDrake: Ah, roger that Otaku
SpaceDrake: BAAF?
Otakuman: Lets not forget Nan-Desu-Kon
AllenDivers: big apple anime fest
Shinobi: SpaceDrake lol
SpaceDrake: Hmm.
Otakuman: I hear lotsa nice thing about the con from As
Otakuman: VAs
Raptor: There are a number of studios in NY
SpaceDrake: True
AllenDivers: central park media sponsors BAAF.. high
profile con, pulls in all the NY studios
Otakuman: Yup
AllenDivers: its in New York if you don't understand the
Big Apple connection
* SpaceDrake is pumping Otakon primarily because he lives
nearby
SpaceDrake: I got that, Allen.
SpaceDrake: Credit, please
Otakuman: Allen: I was born in NYC
Shinobi: Thanks allen. i DIDN'T get the NY connection
AllenDivers: hehe.. sometimes I have to be sure.. you
can't always assume everything
* BizarroDX has joined #dubreview
Nijhazer: Welcome, Biz
Otakuman: Hey Bizarro
Arxane: Welcome Bizarro (Making sure I don't ping out
here)
AllenDivers: yo
KigReadingLJ: heya BizBiz
Slavik_CC: hey bizarro
BizarroDX: How's everyone doning tonight?
Nijhazer: Doing well...
Shinobi: So Nij, you wanting us to try and petition these
cons or what?
SpaceDrake: Decent enough
Nijhazer: Well, it's more like this...
Shinobi: doing just fine
AllenDivers: well, nij, that leads into another topic..
do you think anime dubs will reach the point where an
actor's name will be on the front cover
Nijhazer: I think there's a bit too heavy a focus on this
particular con, Anime Expo. I understand the reasons
behind that and am not calling for decreased involvement
or anything-- but I'd like to see the studios branch out
a bit.
SpaceDrake: Allen, IMHO Crispin Freeman is about one step
short of that level.
Nijhazer: Allen, I'd say that's very possible.
SpaceDrake: Along with a few others.
* Raptor is still sad that the closest con is 5-6 hours
away
Otakuman: Nijh: I like you emaul the AX Con Charwoman
about that
Otakuman: LOL
Shinobi: Yes I think it is too Allen
Arxane: Allen: That's a good question. It might happen
one day
Nijhazer: Otakuman: I should offer to pay her credit card
bills off; then she'd listen. =P
Shinobi: lol
Arxane: Although sub elitists will probably call it
disrepectful or something like that
Otakuman: LOL
Nijhazer: Well, look at it this way...
Shinobi: among otherthings
Raptor: I think steve blum or Wendee lee will reach that
level first. if they aren't there yet
SpaceDrake: Sub elitests = 10% of the market at this point
AllenDivers: well, nij, anime expo's focus is more
focused on the japanese side of things.. they have the
influence to pull in guests of honor straight from
Nippon.. where as other cons dont' have the kind of
pull.. also, being in LA helps as most guests from Japan
don't mind going there
KigReadingLJ: hey didn't the Sub VS Dub wars end with the
DVD???? >_<
Nijhazer: Right now a lot of the "hardcore" fans love
seiyuu and love to know what they think.
SpaceDrake: Bingo Kig
Shinobi: iKig it didn't end it just changed forms
Otakuman: I met Rika Fukani (SailorVenus) Shes nice
Nijhazer: The dub fans are the same way, only with dub
personnel it's much easier to get that kind of
involvement.
Shinobi: My opinion anyway
Arxane: Kig: Most of the arguments did
AllenDivers: sub vs dub will always be around.. and
again, you have to remember there is a vocal minority
who won't stop
Arxane: But now sub fans say, "DVDs will come out a lot
faster if they didn't make a dub"
Arxane: pretty stupid, if you ask me
KigReadingLJ: so it went from Fission bombs to neutron
bombs....
Shinobi: Yep
Nijhazer: And to add to Allen's comment, that vocal
minority comes from EACH side of the "debate".
* KigReadingLJ rolls his eyes oiip
SpaceDrake: Yeah, but we're wandering off topic.
KigReadingLJ: up
Shinobi: ture, this is off topic
Nijhazer: OK then.
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'Dub actor prominence in U.S.
anime fandom'
BizarroDX: What was the topic?
Nijhazer: Now it's on topic. Zing.
Shinobi: It'd be nice to get more Japanese guest off the
west coast too
Raptor: heh
Raptor: thats cheating
SpaceDrake: Yeah. Part of the problem of being an East
Coaster is that we are LITERALLY on the other side of
the planet from Japan
SpaceDrake: Ergo travel expenses are maddening
KigReadingLJ: SDrake: true
AllenDivers: well, its funny, if dub actors are that
important (according to vocal minority) then why do they
garner so much attention at cons.. have you seen the
lines for their autographs?
Shinobi: I'd say VAs are getting more and more attention
and it grow everyday
SpaceDrake: Ooooh yeah
Shinobi: Allen: hit the nail on the head
Slavik_CC: true, that, allen
Nijhazer: Allen, yes, but the same people who argue
against dub actor prominence will tell you...
Shinobi: I spend a lot of time agreeing with Allen
Arxane: As dubs improve in quality and anime gets more
popular, sure dub VAs will be recognized
SpaceDrake: I would sacrifice a small goat for Crispin
Freeman's autograph.
Nijhazer: ...that the people who are interested in dub
actors are not "true" fans, etc.
Otakuman: I remember Talking to Mariette Slyuter (VA)
that Viz was Promoting Ceres & the brng her from Calgary
Canada for ax thus was a few years back
* Raptor agrees with Nij
SpaceDrake: Changing gears for just a moment if I may for
a news flash...
Shinobi: Nij that's kinda narro wmindedness is
...disturbing
KigReadingLJ: Nij: those hardcore fans miss a medication
time or what?
AllenDivers: that's the argument
Arxane: Kig: Nah. They're just real anal
Nijhazer: Well, Kig, you're going to run into that kind
of ridiculousness from anywhere...
* Nork22 has joined #dubreview
KigReadingLJ: anal doesn't begin to describe that
SpaceDrake: Something very, very cool has appeared in my
local Suncoast Pictures store as of late.
Shinobi: Ture you will
Arxane: Welcome, Nork
Nork22: heya
Shinobi: Nork!
Raptor: what?
Otakuman: When I first started my Lisa Site there was
people asking me why make a website to her
BizarroDX: hey Nork
KigReadingLJ: Snorks!
SpaceDrake: Suncoast has carried anime DVDs and a few
bits of merchandise for a while now.
Otakuman: Hey Nork
KigReadingLJ: a looong while, actually
AllenDivers: basically what I'm getting at is, will dub
actors ever reach the prominence that their name becomes
more important than the title they work on.. of course
once this happens, the actor pay structure will change
completely
KigReadingLJ: like at least 5 years
Shinobi: Otakuman: you get hate mail or anything like
that? (morbidly curious)
SpaceDrake: Recently, however, they've added a small
island section dedicated to Anime SOUNDTRACKS, Pocky,
and misc. goodness.
KigReadingLJ: soundtrax?????
Raptor: mmmm soundtracks
KigReadingLJ: yes!
SpaceDrake: This has happened within the last week or so
and I think it's great.
BizarroDX: Yeah, my suncoast too
Nork22: wow... u guys have it good there...
SpaceDrake: Granted, the selection is limited currently...
Nijhazer: Well, Allen, I think it would be awhile before
that happens, but it could happen and may happen
eventually.
Arxane: Allen: That level of recognition might not be a
long way away
KigReadingLJ: well we have Planet Anime here in Houston ;D
SpaceDrake: But SOUNDTRACKS IN A MAJOR STORE, people.
Progress.
Otakuman: Shin: Not hate mail but purists saying that the
JP seiyuu should get the credit not a US VA
KigReadingLJ: true
AllenDivers: it would be like the current hollywood
phenomenon where you see.. "Tom Cruise in Picking His
Noise" it makes $30 million before it even hits the
street
Nijhazer: Right now I am seeing the same level of
"Actor/Actress X is in it?! SOLD!!" from dub fans as
I've seen from sub fans.
* Raptor is still trying to get the tenchi movie 2
soundtrack
Shinobi: Allen: I don't think anime and dub actors will
ever reach that prominece. Most people (including a lot
of fans) don't think about whhere the voices come frome
in their anime
SpaceDrake: (They also have these kickass stuffed Eins
right under the Cowboy Bebop section. I want one.)
Nijhazer: Shinobi: They do, just not by name.
Arxane: Allen" Although it'll probably happen only when
dub fans grow more vocal than sub fans
KigReadingLJ: OtakuM: ask them why are they wasting their
oh so precious time browsing an American VA site
Slavik_CC: there's stuffed eins?
SpaceDrake: Nij, if Freeman is in it, I'm sold.
AllenDivers: hehe
SpaceDrake: Yes there are.
Nijhazer: When I started Dub Review there were a lot of
people who wanted "something like IMDB but for anime
actors, because I hear this guy in a lot of stuff but I
don't know his name".
Otakuman: Kiggy: Tru dat
SpaceDrake: Check your local Suncoast. High quality ones
too.
KigReadingLJ: :)
Otakuman: BRB
* Otakuman has left #dubreview
Shinobi: Suncoast is really going all oiut on
merchandise. They got pocky, soundtracks and stuffed
Eins. COOL!
Arxane: Speaking of soundtracks, I'm still waiting for
the "Noir" soundtracks to be licensed
Raptor: nij, there alreaday is one like that
SpaceDrake: And hurry - those Eins are going like mad.
Slavik_CC: sadly, i don't have a local suncoast, since i
live in canada.
Arxane: And for Bandai to release the ".hack//SIGN"
soundtracks outside the special edition DVDs
Nijhazer: Raptor, I know. We partnered with Crystal Acids
for our cast listings.
Raptor: oh
Nork22: once again, i wish we had this level of items in
giant chain stores...
* Otakuman has joined #dubreview
Slavik_CC: i'd like to pick up some pioneer anime
soundtracks
AllenDivers: what really needs to happen is the anime
vocal business needs to gain more popularity against the
standard voice acting stuff happening in new york and
LA.. for many actors, anime voice acting is an anchor
that holds them down from getting the cush jobs
Otakuman: Back
Shinobi: that's interesting Nij
SpaceDrake: True Allen. Or it's a rut to fall into.
Shinobi: unfortunatly Allen speaks truely
BizarroDX: Allen: you're right
Arxane: Allen: isn't that the reason why many VAs have
aliases?
Raptor: its considered the lowest of the low in acting
SpaceDrake: But these days a good VA can clean up
something hardcore, especially in the anime business.
AllenDivers: it helps pay the bills, but it does hold
them back
KigReadingLJ: wb Herb
Otakuman: I like to Meet Melissa Fahn after seening the
Ed Extra on the CB Movie site
Raptor: if its even considered acting that is
Otakuman: Thanks Kiggy
BizarroDX: I know some LA actors who look down on VO work
AllenDivers: the real reason they have aliases is because
if they are SAG they get fined for working non-SAG
jobs.. and most anime voice acting is non-sag
Shinobi: A lot of avters (espeacilly in LA) look down on
VA work. It's not *real* acting
SpaceDrake: Oh pffff.
Arxane: Allen: I see, said the blind man to his deaf
daughter
SpaceDrake: The ones who say that are the ones who can't
voice-act.
Shinobi: only a few VAs can totally live off voice work
alone
KigReadingLJ: SO tell them to look for work elsewhere?
whatta buncha snubs!
Shinobi: hey being in SAG is a BIG deal for actors
Raptor: also its been said that two memebers can't have
the same name so if a new member joins and has a similar
name as another they have to change it
Shinobi: telling them to forget it is just...wrong on so
many levels
Nijhazer: I think that Allen's right, but at the same
time, it's a bit of a Catch 22 situation
AllenDivers: SAG also holds some people back.. jobs are
often far and few between, so you have to work to eat,
right
Nijhazer: What could really get better prominence for
those sorts of gigs is a change in the pay scale...
which won't happen without a change in the prominence of
those gigs
SpaceDrake: Man, where are the VAs when you need them?
Shinobi: SAG cvan hold people back too
SpaceDrake: This is the sort of stuff THEY should be
answering.
Otakuman: Yeah wheres Mob-Chan?
KigReadingLJ: Monmon?
Shinobi: who?
SpaceDrake: Thus we circle right back to cons, right Nij?
AllenDivers: many actors I talk to tell me they love
being recognized, but it puts them in an awkward
position of possibly getting fined.. if they are using
an alias that is.. so it hurts when the fanbase goes out
of their way to "out" actors under aliases
KigReadingLJ: Monmon Monica Rial
Raptor: can't they just say you can worrk non-union jobs
but YOU take fulll responciblity if anything haappens?
Nijhazer: Allen: Yup
AllenDivers: none of the adv bunch is here, so its
probably sushi night
Nijhazer: I've seen numerous complaints about Crystal
Acids
Otakuman: Monica Chan
Shinobi: yeah, it's not nice ot out an Actor. Even if you
do love them
Arxane: Allen: Or Monica got SARS
Nijhazer: It's a great resource but in the past it has
made efforts to disclose VA aliases
Shinobi: She and the others are probably busy
AllenDivers: union supports union.. its like if the union
goes on strike, you do not continue to work, as you are
then a scab
Shinobi: this is the con season
Geoduck: Back
Nork22: wearn panties on their heads... :P
Geoduck: Nork!
Nork22: did anyone saw the najica blitz journal update?
Shinobi: nope
Geoduck: Kira...in panties...
AllenDivers: hehe.. didn't we talk about extras included
in box sets once?
Raptor: then why be in the union at all?
Otakuman: Huh??
Nijhazer: Yup
* KigReadingLJ wants to start a Kira Yahoo Fan CLub ^^
Shinobi: the Union offers lots o benifits
Slavik_CC: so, is it a matter of time before certain head
honchos find crystalacid.com and then kill off the SAG
actors?
Arxane: Allen: Yes, we did. LIke what extras would you
include in a box?
AllenDivers: union provides benefits and guarantees
certain minimum wages for working a job
Shinobi: insurance
Shinobi: gpay guarnatees
Otakuman: Kira Davis RULZ
Shinobi: decent working conditions
AllenDivers: health insurance, retirement stuff.. things
like that
SpaceDrake: BRB
AllenDivers: no tying them up in small boxes and forcing
them to work over deadly vipers
Geoduck: Slavik_CC: I doubt it. There are plenty of
actors using their union names for non-union dubs.
Nork22: lol
Shinobi: lol Allen!
Raptor: but thats fun (pouts)
Shinobi: :)
Arxane: Poor VAs. They work so hard...
Raptor: geos right about that
Slavik_CC: yet, SAG doesn't catch these actors doing that
or something?
AllenDivers: could be they hope to confuse people by
saying some non-union guy has the same name as them
Shinobi: and nobody loves them
Raptor: the whole steve blum thing, huh?
AllenDivers: SAG is not buying up every single DVD out
there and going through the credits.. its kind of like
the FCC.. they don't look for violations, violations
come to them
Shinobi: good point allen
Slavik_CC: i see...
Otakuman: Ahh
Shinobi: but something like Cyrstal Acids is dangerous
Shinobi: potentially at least
BizarroDX: So if you don't like a VA rat them out
BizarroDX: jk
Raptor: still seems like a crappy deaal if there is no
SAG woprk open
AllenDivers: yeah, it is to a point
Arcturus: <.<
Arcturus: >.>
AllenDivers: that's the business for you
* Arcturus is back with a vengeance
Nijhazer: Welcome back
Shinobi: Unions offer good things, but they get kinda
..snarky if you go againts them
Nijhazer: OK, whew... those were good topics
Nijhazer: And now for our weekly shoutouts!
Arcturus: I have a good one.
Otakuman: Agreed
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'Shout Outs for the Week'

* Geoduck is now known as Child_Geoduck
Nijhazer: Good topic. Take it away, Fabulous Editor.
AllenDivers: but where will totally spies play.. not on

Raptor: i don't do that anymore
Arxane: It's a lead in to Toonami
Shinobi: baby clam things NO! My eyes!
* Child_Geoduck tries to look cute, but fails spectacularly
Arcturus: Alrighty, now for playing younger roles...
* Child_Geoduck is now known as Geoduck
Otakuman: I got to see the RKL Kyoyo arc, Man more edts
ahead
Otakuman: LOL
Arcturus: What's the best way to do it?
AllenDivers: I watched Brigadoon this last week.. decent
dub, but the "children" come off a bit old
SarahWolf: i'm youngest in here ^_^
Geoduck: Arcturus: It Depends
Nork22: get kids i suppose...
Arcturus: There are several adult voice actors who are
good at playing younger characters.
* monica has joined #dubreview
Monica: HEY!!!!!!!!!!
Arcturus: Hi, monica.
Geoduck: Hi Monica

BizarroDX: Everyone's showing up!
AllenDivers: yo jk
BizarroDX: Welcome JK!
Slavik_CC: yo JK
* MrManley has joined #dubreview
Otakuman: Hey hey JK Saw your name on the AX list
Arcturus: Although JK's the perfect guy to talk to on

Otakuman: Yay

Otakuman: JK Yup You da man
Otakuman: Hehehe
Arxane: Arc: Cany you blame them?
MrManley: BAM!!!
Slavik_CC: brb, lag
* Raptor becomes star struck
* Slavik_CC has quit IRC (Quit: )
Arcturus: Alright, now back to the subject at hand...
Kiggy: Hey George saw ADV News today oh boy
JK: What's up minna-san?
Otakuman: What ADV News?
Arcturus: We're talking about roles for younger
characters.
Shinobi: we're having serious and enlightening discusion
SarahWolf: i'm lost again :D
Arxane: Child roles either need young voice actors who
can act well...
Nijhazer: You guys missed some killer topics already. We
gotta keep this train rolling...
Kiggy: congratulations Mr Impact
Monica: Ok
Nork22: or dont sound too old
Shinobi: roll on!
Arcturus: There are a whole bunch of actors who
"specialize" in young roles.
Arxane: or adult VAs who don't sound like they swallowed
helium
* Slavik_CC has joined #dubreview
AllenDivers: monica, so you're playing a villain now
Nijhazer: Getting kids to play roles for children is
tricky because there really aren't that many talented
child actors available.
Monica: Kevin Corn works for ADV and he's a kid
JK: Arx: I prefer the former to the latter.
Raptor: sherry lynn etc
Arcturus: For young boys, there's Ian Hawk, Mona
Marshall, Barbara Goodson, just to name a few...
Monica: Allen I am?
MrManley: NOD... but that kid is growing....
Nork22: isnt kevin like 15 now?
Otakuman: Monica A Villian?? Never
Otakuman: LOL
Arcturus: For young girls, Sherry Lynn, Carrie Savage.
Shinobi: Arx: doesn't leave out a lot of the Japanese
VAs. :)
Arcturus: However, many studios have had success using
actual child actors.
Kiggy: www.advfilms.com
Nijhazer: Really, the only thing that bugs me is when, in
dubs, the adult actors are called upon to voice their
characters as children by raising the pitch of their
voice.
AllenDivers: monica, according to the cast list for
goemon, you are
Arxane: Shinobi: uh huh
AllenDivers: nyanko to be exact
JK: We tend to use young acotrs for the young voices,
unless it's a role that really require an exceptional
amount of work.
Arcturus: Nijhazer: There are some that can pull it off
convincingly, however.
MrManley: Hell, I didn't even know what I was playing
yet....
Monica: Oh how cool! You guys let me know! I had no idea!
Kiggy: nyan? Monica is a cat girl?
Arcturus: Such as Sherry Lynn.
Nijhazer: Arc: Yes, but there are so many that aren't.
Raptor: I thought Carley was a very talented VA. maybe
not the best starting role but she did pretty good
AllenDivers: hehe.. that's pretty sad when we tell them
they got a part
Arxane: Monica: Speaking of cat girl...you should've
voiced the cat in Noir
Shinobi: Monica's a villian
Nork22: i admit carley is ok, but just the whole feel of
being a bit too old for the part got to me
Shinobi: what'd I miss?
Otakuman: Raptor: True I like Carly too
Monica: I dunno I've played both little girls and little
boys
MrManley: Wow... I'm a guy named "Impact" Hot damn....
Monica: Oh thanks Arx but they used real cat noises
Kiggy: first she plays a ferret in Ushio & TOra, now
she's a catgirl ;p
Monica: Hold on I wanna check the site...
Shinobi: can life get any better?
Arxane: Monica: I know. I can dream
MrManley: I am all a-tingle
Otakuman: LOL @ George
Nijhazer: Heh; we scooped the actors. =P
Raptor: well, she was te same age as the character at the
time so it was a sound descion
JK: I'm using some very talented young actors on Haibane
Renmei to play the young feathers. It just sounds more
natural.
Shinobi: go George
Arcturus: Wow, I think I could say anything and nobody
would notice!
Kiggy: George : sounds like a real badass
Otakuman: Monica: Janice Posted it
AllenDivers: so, anyone read my latest lost in
translation? I got to play a guy with a hat
Raptor: i did
Nijhazer: I love it when my ears are slashed off and
eaten by a frog.
Shinobi: I did too. Very amusing!
BizarroDX: Arc I noticed
Arxane: Allen: I read it. Nice to see how different
studios dub their series
MrManley: Holy crap.... talk about getting what you ask
for... GAHHHHH!@
Nork22: allen: read that, amusing
Shinobi: lol George!
Arxane: Arc: Pur some lemon juice on that. It should be
fine
* Arcturus changes topic to 'Playing younger/child roles
// Stay on topic! STAY ON TOPIC! Almost there...'
Slavik_CC: i read that, too. you have "wala guy" under
your belt...
* lightningcount has joined #dubreview
Geoduck: Arcturus: Ha ha ha
SarahWolf: aww
Nork22: lol
Shinobi: Star Wars
AllenDivers: hehe
Otakuman: Hey LC
Shinobi: love it
lightningcount: hi
* SarahWolf throws cheese at random ppl in the chat
AllenDivers: got to start somewhere in the business
BizarroDX: count welcome
Raptor: you should to get at least one wala role from
each studio ^_^
MrManley: **runs off into a corner and bounces up and
down**
lightningcount: almost forgot bout this
Slavik_CC: yuck! cheese!
AllenDivers: arc, if it helps, the part I played was a
guy cheering for a young guy
Kiggy: hehehe
Kiggy: mm cheese!
Nijhazer: "YOU CAN DO EEEEET!!"
Arxane: Okay, so about child roles...which adult VA do
you think's dont the most convincing child role?
Arxane: done
Nork22: arx: sherry lynn definitely
Kiggy: mmm Tiffany Grant's Sandora?
Arcturus: Carrie Savage.
Monica: Ok I'm back :) Yay!
Shinobi: YAY
Monica: Well congrats George
Kiggy: rakku!
AllenDivers: stephanie nadolny does a great gohan and goku
lightningcount: lol what exactly is being spoke about
Nork22: been playing Xenosaga, and i can't believe how
sherry lynn sounded so much like a young girl
Raptor: yeah sherry
Arcturus: Jessica Calvello and Megan Hollingshead in His
and Her Circumstances.
MrManley: Thank you Mon Mon Chan *cry!*
SpaceDrake: I am the return, once again.
Shinobi: I wouldn't call them kids thoguh
lightningcount: quite a few actors this evening?
Raptor: Hillary Haag need to do some of that too ^_^
Nork22: here here!!
JK: the question lost me arx, is it which sounds the
most like a chile or the least ikke a child?
JK: chid! Typo
JK: Or a chile.
Slavik_CC: what about debi derryberry? did she do any
kid roles in any other anime?
Arxane: JK: I guess which adult VAs done a really good
child voice?
Raptor: mmmm chile
lightningcount: best child va by far is Barbra Goodson
but also Safrin Henderson does solidly hmm who else
Arxane: Doesn't sound like a squeaky munchkin
Nork22: debi plays kids as well..
AllenDivers: sometimes I think its a matter of, does the
role really need to sound like a child.. there is a
matter of being consistent with the other voices in the
dub
Raptor: Debbie was good
Nork22: jimmy neutron...
Otakuman: Saffron Henderson is good
SpaceDrake: The thing of it is, don't the Japanese pull
in actual kids for their child characters?
Shinobi: very true Allen
lightningcount: Cara Edwards as Goten to bad she quit
though
Nork22: space: not often
Arcturus: SpaceDrake: Not necessarily.
MrManley: Tara Strong...
Otakuman: Lets not Forget Sandy Fox doing young girls
Otakuman: Voice wise
Slavik_CC: and don't forget sandy fox...
Arxane: Seaking of Henderson, I'm almost convinced she
and Jilliam Michaels are one and the same
Nork22: oooo sandy fox, yes indeed
Nijhazer: Allen's right... but personally the only thing
I don't understand is why so many people complain about
dub actors not sounding like teenagers for teenager
roles.
Monica: hA!
Shinobi: Space: just becasue the Japanese do it doesn't
make it the best way
SpaceDrake: And I swear to god Wendee Lee did Yahiko in
the international version of Rurouni Kenshin and did it
wonderfully.
Arxane: Well, not really
Nijhazer: I've never thought that was a problem.
Nork22: dont forget julie maddelena
Arcturus: SpaceDrake: The Samurai X version? No, that was
Ian Hawk.
Otakuman: Why you say that Arx?
Shinobi: I agree Nij. It's never been a big deal to me.
Arxane: Otakuman: I'm just saying those two sound so
alike in their child roles.
Slavik_CC: ohhh, ohh julie maddelena!
Raptor: Mayuka (gets all sparly eyed)
lightningcount: ppl had issues w/ Sakura sounding to old
when the actor was 12
Arxane: Many people thought Henderson plays Shippo on
Inuyasha, but she doesn't
SpaceDrake: Well, whoever. It was convincing enough for a
12-year-old
Raptor: she was 9
Otakuman: Anyone saw the RBHS Boxset?? Man It LOOKS
SWEET!!
Otakuman: Arx: Ahh
Monica: There are kids that sound older than I do...You
never know. It's all up to the director
AllenDivers: the problem with sakura was the type of
dialogue they were using.. came across as older
Shinobi: true Monica to true
Raptor: true
lightningcount: unfortunately you cant cast a 9 year old
to well and also please note that in america little
girls at age 10 don't sound like sakura did
AllenDivers: the dialogue helps with the age as well
Nork22: true with the dialogue
Nijhazer: FUNimation's dub of Fruits Basket is one of the
best I've seen for dealing with small children roles.
Arxane: Allen: Just as long as her dialogue isn't heavy
in valley-girl speak
lightningcount: ya a 9 year old saying insignificant just
don't work
Arcturus: They had a child play the role of Hiro...
Nork22: sounds mor like a 16 year old dialogue
Shinobi: yeah, I think the dialogue might be a more
important factor to the whole thing
Arcturus: In Fruba, I mean.
Otakuman: Interesting how Funi is goo do with Kiddy Grade
AllenDivers: Fruits Basket was an outstanding dub
Shinobi: yup, high praise all around
Nork22: Fruba is really a good dub alright
AllenDivers: It did a great job of carrying the emotional
impact of the script all the way through
Nork22: still waiting for vol. 4 to arrive... :(
Slavik_CC: that's it! i'm going to get fruits basket!
* Raptor need to see it as well
Shinobi: you should slavik
Nijhazer: It's a fantastic show.
AllenDivers: the show itself is hilarious, at the same
time being very emotional
SarahWolf: i've been too broke to buy the 4th dvd :(
lightningcount: has anyone seen the samarai x dub of
Kenshin
Nijhazer: One of the best I've seen in years.
Nijhazer: LC: Check our reviews of it. ;)
JK: There's this one dub critic who thinks that Kids
can't play young roles in anime.
Shinobi: I have. I even liked it. (not as much as the TV
series but eh)
lightningcount: it has ahorid rap in fandom i personally
didnt find it all that bad
AllenDivers: why is that jk?
Monica: Why JK?
Arxane: JK: and who's that?
Arcturus: JK: Yes. Well. He's wrong.
Nork22: who's that?
Slavik_CC: though, my anime friends keep telling me that
i won't like fruits basket... time for me to go against
the grain
lightningcount: Deric Prince makes a better Saito i think
Kiggy: it's a critic. Critics lck developed brains
Shinobi: lol kiggy
AllenDivers: easy there kiggy.. there's a critic sitting
in the shadows... hmm... better turn on the light
Raptor: well, some fans say no english VA can do good in
anime. i don't put much stock in fans or critics
Shinobi: JK: I can see why a critic would argue that
Arxane: Critics are so uptight that if they put a piece
of coal up their ass it'll become a diamond
Otakuman: Tara Jayne sounded good in RK
JK: We'll I can't say why, all I know is he once
confronted Taliesin and myself for casting kida in our
dubs. This made Taliesin unhappy since he was a child
actor himself.
Arcturus: Kigyy: Technically, all the writers here are
critics.
Nijhazer: Arx: You're technically a critic
Kiggy: well there are critics and there are reviewers :p
Arxane: Nij: We're all critics
Raptor: thats true arc
Monica: Yeah that would be like a slap in the face
Nijhazer: We all lack developed brains
JK: Damn I'm on a typo roll
Nork22: sheeshhh...
Arxane: Aren't reviews just formal opinions?
AllenDivers: I think a lot of it depends on the skill of
the director to get the required performance out of a
child actor
Nijhazer: We are all so uptight that if you put coal up
our asses... never mind
Kiggy: thing is the word critic has kinda of a stigma to
me, but I digress
Shinobi: ouch, that is harsh JK
Arxane: that try to sound smart?
Monica: Exactly Allen
SpaceDrake: BTW, JK, quickly off topic... have you heard
anything more about further Hellsing episodes?
* Clark has joined #dubreview
SpaceDrake: (You being one of the Hellsing biaches and
all)
Nijhazer: Welcome, Clark
AllenDivers: yo clark
Otakuman: Hi Clark
Shinobi: hey Clark
Monica: Hey clark
Kiggy: besides one universal truth: You can't please
everybody all the time
Clark: Hi all.
Nork22: hi clark
BizarroDX: clarke!
Nijhazer: Whoa, we're almost at twenty people tonight...
JK: Drake: I'm sure I'll be the last to know.
Arxane: Kig: Excatly
Slavik_CC: hey clark!
AllenDivers: oh, by the way, jk, I finally got around to
watching the last 2 volumes of Hellsing, and yes,
crispin's performance of alucard finally grew on me
Arcturus: So, Clark, has BZ ever had a child actor in a
duba?
BizarroDX: oops
Nijhazer: That would be a new record I think.
Arcturus: *dub
Arxane: Nij: Just 80 more people and we can be listed!
Raptor: but you can jerk the rest off -robin williiams :(
AllenDivers: can I get a booyah for clark?
SpaceDrake: The last two volumes of Hellsing are
EXCELLENT.
Slavik_CC: you mean a new hellsing series, drake?
SpaceDrake: Booyah?
Raptor: i mean :(
Nijhazer: BOOYAH!
JK: High praise indeed Allen :)
Kiggy: BOOYAH CLARK
Clark: Arc: Yes, actually. I think.
SarahWolf: hayoob?
lightningcount: curious if anything knows anything bout
the cyborg 9 dub?
MrManley: booyah!
Shinobi: booyah!
SpaceDrake: More like a continuation of the current one
Slavik.
SarahWolf: HAYOOB!
lightningcount: who is dubbing
* KyleHebert has joined #dubreview
Arcturus: I'm going to give this topic a few more
minutes, then I have another one I'd like to start.
Arcturus: Hi, Kyle.
Shinobi: KYLE!
Nork22: hello kyle!!!
Shinobi: BOOYAH!
AllenDivers: as I said many times, jk, I never had a
problem with his performance, it was always his tone..
but in volumes 3 and 4, he finally hit the right tone
for me
BizarroDX: Kyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
Monica: >Sidenote:Miguel says hi!
Arxane: Cyborg 9 dub? Virtually nothing is known,
including the studio who has it!
AllenDivers: you kyle
Kiggy: Happy Birthday to You!
Slavik_CC: gonzo has no plans to make more hellsing at
this point. :/
Kiggy: Happy Birthday to You!
JK: Hey Kyle!
KyleHebert: hola!
SpaceDrake: The Almighty Herbert enters the room
Monica: Hey Kyle!
SarahWolf: hey kyle :D
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Kyle!'
Monica: Happy B Day
Kiggy: Happy Birthday Kyle
KyleHebert: thanks, guys :)
AllenDivers: can I get a booyah for kyle and his birthday
Arcturus: But I'd like to hear Clark's and now Kyle's
thoughts on the matter.
MrManley: BOOYAH Kyle!
Kiggy: Happy Birthday to You!
lightningcount: welcome Kyle
Shinobi: happy B-day KYLE!
Raptor: happy b
JK: It's Hebert Drake
Nijhazer: SHOUT OUT to Kyle!
Nijhazer: BOOYAH!
lightningcount: oh btw Kyle rules
Nork22: KYLE!! come down to New Zealand again!!!!
Clark: Arc: What matter is that?
Arxane: Go robot
Arxane: It's your birthday
Kiggy: BOOYAH KYLE!!!
KyleHebert: woohoooooooo, thank you all very much, guys!
Arxane: Go robot
* Slavik_CC has quit IRC (Quit: )
Clark: Happy Birthday, Kyle.
Arxane: It's your birthday
SarahWolf: HAYOOB!
SpaceDrake: All we need now is He That Is Crispin in here
and I'll be happy.
Arcturus: Clark: Playing young roles in anime dubs.
Kiggy: gimme a K
KyleHebert: wow, now THAT'S a welcome, lol
BizarroDX: Happy Birthday, Mr. Hebert
Kiggy: gimme a Y
lightningcount: and beyond him John Allen also rules
* Slavik_CC has joined #dubreview
Kiggy: gimme a L
Otakuman: Happy B-Day Kyle
Clark: Arc: Guys or gals?
Kiggy: gimme a E
Arcturus: Clark: Both.
KyleHebert: arcturus.........topic?
SpaceDrake: Why doesn't The One True Freeman ever come in
here anyway? Too busy?
Monica: Your b day
Arxane: Blow out the candles, and make a wish. Put a
smile on, cause it's your birthday, b****
KyleHebert: hugs, mon!!!!!!!
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'Child Roles in Dubs-- How
best to handle them'
AllenDivers: anyone actually invite crispin freeman?
Monica: Yay! I got hugs!
Arxane: I love Sealab
KyleHebert: AND kisses, mon
Shinobi: we have a topic? woah!
Nijhazer: SD: Crispin has been in South America for the
past few weeks. Besides that, yes, he's an extremely
busy dude.
AllenDivers: hey, you two, get a room!
Monica: Woo Hoo kisses too!
BizarroDX: Sealab rules, bizarro!
* SpaceDrake pokes JK
KyleHebert: child roles: we used a kid once on a Funi
dub: Blue Gender
Nork22: topic? didnt that disappeared when kyle came in?
SarahWolf: i knew we had a topic... but... i just got
sorta lost o_O
SpaceDrake: Drag him in here some time
Monica: :P
Clark: Arc: I think it's appropriate a lot of the times.
But if you can get real kids, that's great.
Nijhazer: I'll see if I can drag him in here some time. ;)
SpaceDrake: Touche, Nij
AllenDivers: before or after that character was killed in
a red mist?
Clark: JK probably is more qualified to speak since NGP's
actually used kids, right?
AllenDivers: because most characters in blue gender
disappear in a red mist
KyleHebert: the little girl who was killed actually WAS a
little girl
lightningcount: it depends on the content of the show as
adv once said if the show contained overly mature themes
kid actors are not the answer
Nijhazer: Kyle: Actually you guys also used a kid on
Fruits Basket
Monica: ADV must have some kids hidden I haven't seen yet
cause I didn't voice my character as a child recently....
Nijhazer: We were commenting on that and how much it
added to the dub
SarahWolf: wasn't that on the one girl that wouldn't talk?
KyleHebert: awesome, nij......yeah i only had Mr. Takei
in that whole show
KyleHebert: so i haven't seen it all yet
AllenDivers: the tiger girl? can't remember the character
name
Shinobi: Kisa? yes
Nijhazer: Sarah: They used a six-year-old to voice Hiro
towards the end
lightningcount: and budget child actors are much more
expensive from my understanding
AllenDivers: kisa
JK: I'm awakae!
SarahWolf: i haven't seen the 4th one yet
JK: Damn typo's
Shinobi: alright JK
KyleHebert: strict rules for kid actors.......they can
only work so long
lightningcount: and most are union members
Monica: It's typo night for JK :P
Nijhazer: Child roles don't have to be voiced by kids...
AllenDivers: you are also limited with how you can use
child actors in terms of how long they can work per day
and all that
Nijhazer: There's plenty of actors/actresses who are
great at voicing kids
Nork22: still waiting for Fruba vol. 4 **sobs**
* Raptor has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
Nijhazer: Ian Hawk, for example, and Wendee Lee
Arcturus: If you can get talented children to play child
roles, though, I say go for it.
AllenDivers: and well, the union frowns on them washing
people's cars and making shoes
KyleHebert: we all wish we could hire Haley Joel Osment
Shinobi: yeah, but a child isn't always the answer
AllenDivers: you probably couldn't afford him
Nijhazer: I only have problems with the adult actors
simply raising their voices but that trend is
(slooooowly) beginning to change
Arxane: Kyle: He's too overused these days
SpaceDrake: Ian Hawk kicked ass in the internation
Rurouni Kenshin dub. Even if people hate that one I love
it and Ian Hawk owns all.
KyleHebert: Haley is SCARY good, and yes, most likely
unaffordable
Nork22: lol
Shinobi: lol Allen
KyleHebert: aaaaw, arxane......only jungle book 2
Arcturus: Alrighty then...
KyleHebert: lol
Clark: Arc: The big problem is also how long the actors
actually stay kids, right?
Arcturus: Clark: True.
Nijhazer: Kyle: He was also in Kingdom Hearts
Arxane: Kyle: Which was too much for me
lightningcount: lol well in any case i know when i was
younger i did some small screen acting and i was forced
to join the union
Monica: Here's a question what if the subject matter is
kinda ecchi do you still hire a child?
JK: If it's a supporting role, I'll certainly give it to
a younger actor. If it's a major role, I have to
consider other factors like availabilit (School) or
difficulty of the role.
AllenDivers: it would be rough to have a kid for a long
term role in a long series
Arxane: Monica: Just hide as much information from the
kid as possible!
JK: Monica: Never.
KyleHebert: ecchi......eeeeek. hmmmm
Shinobi: Monica: i'd say best not to
Monica: Ha! That works Arx
AllenDivers: kind of the problem the harry potter movies
are facing.. if they don't keep making the films now,
the kids will grow up before they finish the books
SpaceDrake: Another question for JK if I may...
Nork22: Monica: u crazy?
Nijhazer: Good points from Monica and JK...
JK: Go Drake?
lightningcount: jk for instance if i'm not mistaken
haibain renme contains many children will you use child
actors?
Monica: That's what I say but you know...you can't always
use kids
SpaceDrake: Any plans to use some of the other Brit
actors from Hellsing in other projects?
Nork22: JK: cant wait for haibane
AllenDivers: he mentioned that he was doing that already
for the younger feathers
MrManley: kind of like with kurumi
SpaceDrake: K.T. Gray was good, and the woman who did
Integra (gah, her name escapes me at the moment) OWNED
MY SHORTS
JK: Lightning: I am using younger actors for the very
young feathers.
Nijhazer: Victoria Harwood, SD.
Arxane: I gotta see Haibane someday
SpaceDrake: THAT'S it.
* Arcturus changes topic to 'Does watching sub first
affect your perception of a dub? (And vice-versa)'
Shinobi: George: what about kurumi?
Monica: There ya go George
SpaceDrake: Grr. How could I forget that.
Otakuman: What about SAK?
lightningcount: younger in comparison to what
Nijhazer: Arc: Master the art of topic change. You did it
too early! ;)
JK: Drake: Victoria Harwood.
* SpaceDrake Is no longer a Hellsing Otaku out of shame
Arxane: Arc: I dunno. I usually watch the dub first!
MrManley: "Pardon me, sir, would you mind having your kid
see naked breasts while he's making oyut with a pink
haired steel angel?"
JK: Drake was that your question?
SpaceDrake: Right. But don't dodge the question. They
getting more anime work or are they moving on?
AllenDivers: hehe.. uh, what was that george, I got sutck
round pink haired
MrManley: Yes, I think using Kira for that was a good
idea...
Shinobi: good point George. *feels stupid for asking*
Otakuman: LOL @ George
Clark: Absolutely. The first viewing of any version of
anything always colors your impressions.
* Raptor has joined #dubreview
JK: Drake: You'll be hearing some of those actors in L/R.
lightningcount: well thats the series they spoke of sak
when saying that it was to mature to use children
Arxane: If you try to base your opinion of the dub on the
sub's performances, then yes, it will affect your
perception of the dub
Otakuman: George: Yup Kira The Sailor
Otakuman: LOL
* Raptor curses his ISP
Arcturus: The reason I mention this is because many
people say they don't like a dub because they watched it
sub first.
MrManley: Of course, Kira's back in the groove playing
girls again, so she must be happy
Arxane: Which is why I always watch the dub first
SpaceDrake: L/R?
Slavik_CC: mainly, it takes one a while to get used to
watching dubbed after watching the subbed version.
Nork22: kira with panties...
Nijhazer: Arc, that's very true.
Nork22: :P
Nijhazer: By the same token,
AllenDivers: that's what I was saying about hellsing...
the japanese va for alucard colored my view of crispin's
performance.. it took a long time for his alucard to
feel right for me
Otakuman: Kira With WHAT??
Clark: Same thing as reading a book and then watching the
movie version, right?
Nijhazer: a lot of people do not like dubs in general
because they always see a series fansubbed first.
Shinobi: You know I too thought the first view sahped
your perception, but I watched Vandread subbed first and
l;ater dubbed. I liked the dub bettet
Nijhazer: And so dubs just sound unnatural to them.
Nork22: otaku: seriously i'll find the picture
Slavik_CC: same here, shinobi
* Raptor agrees with nij
KyleHebert: i tend to watch dubs only (not that i dislike
the original.......just only so much time available)
MrManley: "Hi, my name is Kira Vincent Davis, and I'm
wearing Jessica's panties" - AWA7
lightningcount: the worst children i've heard in anime
tend to be in tv dubs
MrManley: Made the entire con for me...
BizarroDX: But I've seen fansubs first and it didn't
change my love of a dub
KyleHebert: WHOA, george
KyleHebert: lol
Clark: Allen: I couldn't get used to Lex as Sanosuke in
RK for the longest time. Like the 80th episode or so!
Arxane: People who watch subs first have a voice in their
heads, and when they don't hear that voice int he dubs,
they don't like the dub
AllenDivers: because of what I do, I often see the
japanese language version first.. i prefer to watch the
dub first so i can actually watch what's going on in the
anime.. if I'm reading subtitles, Its often difficult to
catch all the action
lightningcount: digimon kids
Otakuman: Nijh: Not Me I saw Fansubs first then watch dub
MrManley: That was a direct quote... and the thong was
nice, too
SpaceDrake: Allen, for me the Japanese VA actually felt
(still feels) weird.
Shinobi: damn George! where was that?
JK: It depends how long I watched it subbed. Take Lupin,
I grew up watching it in Japanese so I only can listen
to Yasuo Yamada as Lupin (or his sound alike since he's
now gone).
SpaceDrake: And what's L/R?
lightningcount: the digimon yugioh and pokemon dubs are
first to come to mind the cast sounds generally to
mature to be kids
MrManley: Opening ceremonies at AWA7
Kiggy: Speaking of Kira, I'
lightningcount: lr is lisenced by royalty
JK: Drake: Licensed by Royalty
MrManley: Hehehehehe
SpaceDrake: Ahhhh. I'll look into that.
Nork22: digimon season 3 is definitely more mature...
Raptor: digimon and pokemon aren't that baad for voices
Kiggy: Speaking of Kira, I'm toying with the idea of
making a Yahoo Fan club to her
Nijhazer: Here's a good spin-off of this topic...
SpaceDrake: Digimon is interesting.
MrManley: Welp, Mom knows... ROCKAGE!
MrManley: Yes, I'm a geek
Raptor: YGO is ok to. its just some of the dialouge
AllenDivers: rakku!
Nijhazer: If you watch the Japanese first... are you
likely to enjoy the dub any more or less if it strives
to emulate the Japanese version in tone?
BizarroDX: Kig I'd juoin the club
Shinobi: rakku!
MrManley: Got to tell Mom, of course
SpaceDrake: It started off as a kid's show and then,
slowly, the designers and artists realized they had
something special on their hands.
lightningcount: digimon 3 had a great dub and early
pokemon and yugioh were better dubs
Slavik_CC: not exactly, nij.
MrManley: That makes me happy. YEI! MYOW!
Shinobi: I also saw Rouroni Kenshin subbed first, but
loved the dub from the start
lightningcount: what show do you mean digimon 3?
MrManley: Mon - your royalites for the above phrases are
in the mail
MrManley: BRB
Monica: Mail?
AllenDivers: its like anything, having one set of sounds
in your head affect how you hear things later.. so you
become a bit more sensitive.. especially to translation
Raptor: yeah digimon tamers is the best. though i think
piokemons dub has gotten better over time
Slavik_CC: otherwise, if the dub tries to emulate all the
nuances and stuff from the original, chances are that
you'll have a stilted or unnatural sound to it.
Arxane: Nij: I tend to judge the dub on its own merits,
so if it strives to match the sub then it had better do
it well
Otakuman: Nork: URL Please
Nork22: otaku: hold on
lightningcount: no i prefered the first season of the
pokemon dub
Arxane: A good example of emulating the Japanese VAs is
FLCL. A bad example is Pilot Candidate
MrManley: For "That makes me happy" and "YEI" - your
people will get together with my people at lunch and
hammer out the payment :)
lightningcount: second was ok then it died the writing
killed it
Nork22: otaku: kira with panties - http://www.livejournal.
com/users/dlw_fan_service/2304.html
Monica: Okie
lightningcount: also the earlier yugioh dubs are much
better
Otakuman: Richard Hayworth IS Kenshin that he is!
AllenDivers: I think trying to emulate the original
soundtrack paints you in a corner.. for the most part
the english dub should be a retelling or reinterpretation
of the original story.. english just sounds different
to japanese.. now there's a matter of staying true to
the themes of the original, so that's very important
Otakuman: lol
Arxane: Making a dub is pointless if the VAs sound
stilted and unnatural
SpaceDrake: Aye.
Nijhazer: Indeed
Shinobi: A while Allen has a point it's possible to watch
someting subbed and later enjoy the dub
SpaceDrake: That's another problem I had with the
AnimeWorks dub of RK.
Raptor: well, even people that only watch the sub of
pokemon say the show has gotten not to great in the
recent seasons
lightningcount: wonder how 4kids shaman king and sonic
dubs will turn out
SpaceDrake: Richard did Kenshin in BOTH versions.
Nijhazer: And really, isn't it true that what sticks with
us shouldn't be the -tone- of the dub?
lightningcount: he only person to retain role which is a
shaim
Raptor: they are on the foxbox and their FB dubs are
pretty good. and their TMNT (drools)
SpaceDrake: But after watching RK International, in
Animeworks it's like Richard was guzzling Yoda Juice
when acting or something.
Kiggy: http://www.livejournal.com/users/dlw_fan_service/23
04.html#cutid1
Otakuman: Who is Misao's VA in the rk dub? Shes COOL
AllenDivers: its really how the story was conveyed
SpaceDrake: What sounds natural in Japanese does NOT
always work in English.
KyleHebert: amen, spacedrake
Arcturus: Otakuman: Debra Cunningham.
Shinobi: Otaku: Debra Cunnigham did Misao
Clark: Otakuman: If you mean the MB version.
SpaceDrake: No disrepsect for Richard at all...
lightningcount: the shaman king and sonic arent on fox
Otakuman: Thanks
SpaceDrake: but man. It DID sound weird, admit it.
Arxane: Trying to emulate the Japanese can not only sound
stilted, it also defeats the point of being a VA
Slavik_CC: wait a minute there's two version of the RK
dub?
Clark: SpaceDrake & Lighningcount: How much of the
international version did you guys catch?
Monica: BRB
Shinobi: ARX: agreed
lightningcount: maybe they should send the sonic dub up
north to Canada
MrManley: **still peeling off the ceiling**
SpaceDrake: Almost all of it, Clack.
Raptor: they both will be yes
SpaceDrake: *clark
Arxane: VAs should use their own talent, not try to
emulate someone elses
SpaceDrake: In fact!
Kiggy: I remember Viz translating the lyrics to Ranma's
songs so they matched the JP singers words
Otakuman: Shaman King is KidsWB
Kiggy: >.<
lightningcount: seeing as ocen did *a* sonic dub
Slavik_CC: exactly, arxane.
SpaceDrake: It's SO POPULAR in Australia that one of the
big networks has to keep playing it due to viewer demand.
SpaceDrake: If you can get AXN from Oz, you can easily
see RK International.
AllenDivers: uh, I honestly can't imagine them doing that
kiggy.. there's a matter of tyring to emulate the lip
flaps
Raptor: i could have sworn that SK was going to the foxbox
SpaceDrake: I highly reccomend it.
lightningcount: it is but its not there yet
Nijhazer: Anyone mind if I change topic?
SpaceDrake: And that's right...
Arxane: Allen: Reminds me of WordFit
Kiggy: They did Isaw it on the first Ranma episodes
SpaceDrake: Who did Izzy in Digimon?
KyleHebert: (waits for topic)
Clark: SpaceDrake: Mona Marshall.
Otakuman: Raptor you maybe right
Arcturus: Go ahead, Nij.
Shinobi: Mona Marshal, I think
lightningcount: Mona Marshel
AllenDivers: hehe.. yeah, viz's crutch of the decade
Kiggy: i mean the singer sais someting and the subtitle
matched the word phonetically :p
Nijhazer: k, the Fabulous Editor approves. Here we go...
SpaceDrake: Well, Mona Marshall as SOUJIROU in RK
International. *drool*
Otakuman: Mona Marshall
Shinobi: lol Allen
Arxane: Raptor: Shaman King is 4Kids, which provides fo
Kids WB
Slavik_CC: how does wordfit works?
Raptor: i know sonic is cause i seen a com for it
SpaceDrake: It sounds weird but OH GOD IT WORKS.
Clark: SpaceDrake: I can see it.
SpaceDrake: (sounds weird as in it might not seem like
it'd work at first)
AllenDivers: wordfit is basically a computer program that
manipulates the audio to fit within a certain space
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'The American Accent Factor:
How dubs are received in other English-speaking nations'
Raptor: but FB is their block so you never know
SpaceDrake: She is SO CREEPY in that role.
Clark: SpaceDrake: Though I'm kind of partial to ours.
MrManley: Well, following the subject.... I used to
always watch the sub before the dub and I was one of
those weirdoes who actually looked forward to the
differences.
SpaceDrake: Nice one Nij
lightningcount: no all 4kids now goes to fox because they
baught the sapce
MrManley: And, of course, just in time to get the subject
changed :)
Shinobi: I don't know anything 'bout that Nij
lightningcount: only anime kwb is gettin is astroboy and
megaman
Nijhazer: Maybe not, but it's a factor. Dubs done here
are released in Australia and the UK.
Arxane: Nij: American accents? Oh, God, those poor
Europeans
Slavik_CC: thus, wordfit was one of the complaints in
ocean dubs, huh?
SpaceDrake: Well, I can say for a fact that where I was,
RK International was almost frighteningly popular.
AllenDivers: I liked to do it the other way george..
watch the dub first, then watch the subbed version next
to get more information
Nork22: i dont know, but i guess it's just the same
KyleHebert: regarding dubs in other english speaking
countries, i'm still trying to figure out why there are
TWO english DBZ dubs
Raptor: TMNT, Ultimate muscle, kirby and fighhtting
foodons are all 4kids
Arxane: Slavik: Yes, it was. But they don't use it that
often anymore
Nijhazer: At one point-- and I don't know if this is
still the case-- new dubs were made for the UK on some
ADV releases.
Shinobi: George: you and me both. When I watch a sub i
always go "wpow, can't wait to se what the differeances
are in the dub."
SpaceDrake: I was in Indonesia for a few years, and RK
got so popular on AXN that it was eventually translated
into native Indonesian and did GANGBUSTERS on local TV
AllenDivers: wordfit was seen as a crutch.. people felt
that ocean was not doing geniune performances because
they could just take the words and play around with them
to make them fit
lightningcount: well all the foxbox dubs while well acted
seem way to changed
Raptor: they do get away with alot more then YGO
Otakuman: Funny to hear Veronica Taylor as April O'neill
KyleHebert: allen, sounds like Wordfit is similar to a
Pro Tools function called "time compress"...or "time
stretch", where the audio can be manipulated.
lightningcount: oceans doing that allowed for mor room
for actors which s good
JK: Out of curiosity, who here is chatting from outside
of the US?
SpaceDrake: Generally, though, it's similar to here.
Nijhazer: Do you think that American-done dubs are good
enough to release in other countries or that it should
be re-dubbed in that country?
Nork22: me
SpaceDrake: Not me, these days.
Slavik_CC: me, JK!
AllenDivers: licensing rights kyle.. other companies have
the european rights for dbz.. or some weird thing about
the televised version being licensed by a seperate
company
Nijhazer: We've got people here who HAVE lived outside
the US, though.
SpaceDrake: I WAS in Indonesia while a teenager but I'm
back in the US now.
Nork22: me JK, im from New Zealand :D
Nijhazer: Arc used to be in Argentina and I think Germany.
Slavik_CC: i'm canadian.
AllenDivers: to a certain extent kyle, but it was very
proprietory in nature
Arxane: Nij: I don't know...depends upon who licenses a
series in different countries
KyleHebert: allen, ah
Kiggy: I am from Puerto RIco which technically is US
territory, but culturally is Latn America
lightningcount: in Canada and australia i beleive the
dbz funimation dub is available on dvd while the kb dub
is on tv
AllenDivers: often times, different companies have tv
rights and things
Raptor: i thought the canadian DBZ dub was done because
the people in canada didn't like how long FUNi was
taking with the releases?
SpaceDrake: I know that AXN, the Aussie network I
mentioned earlier, actively courts anime liscences.
AllenDivers: like with rorouni kenshin.... mediablasters
isn't part of the tv showing other than the fact they
introduced the japanese company to cartoon network to
get the show on the air.. all mediablasters asked for
was that cn use their dub
SpaceDrake: I think they nicked Trigun JUST as I was
leaving Indonesia.
JK: Slavik: Where from?
Slavik_CC: i live around the toronto area in ontario.
SpaceDrake: That was a few years ago. I imagine they got
stuff like Hellsing these days (Brit accents, it'd do
gangbusters in Oz)
Slavik_CC: in other words, i live in markham.
AllenDivers: I had a topic that I didn't get a chance to
run past you guys last week.. what does it take to pick
certain accents for a particular property
SpaceDrake: Actually, there's an interesting question:
how well has Hellsing done in the UK?
Nijhazer: Allen, could you be more specific?
Shinobi: what do you mean Allen?
JK: I don't think it's in the UK yet.
Clark: Allen: Huh? You sure?
Arxane: Allen: Very good question. In the international
level, country accents could be acceptable
AllenDivers: Pioneer announced Last Exile at akon, and if
you watch the show, a lot of the designs look very
european in nature.. so, is that a show taht is
screaming for european accents?
Raptor: i've heard from UK fans that have seen the dub
Nork22: in australia/nz the dub is rather a mixed bag
JK: Wasn't there some rumor that ADVUK was distributing
there?
* SarahWolf is now known as SarahWolf-brb
Nijhazer: SD: I did get a comment from a Brit that over
there, they think the Hellsing accents are good in some
cases and really fake in others, but of course he could
only speak for himself and his friends.
Monica: Ok sorry....
Arcturus: I was amused by the reaction of many sub fans,
claiming that the accents in Hellsing sounded fake.
SpaceDrake: True.
Arcturus: Even for the ones by British actors...
* Huntressfan has joined #dubreview
SpaceDrake: It's called being anal Arc
Shinobi: Arc: that's funny
Nork22: because of the british roots, the hellsing dub's
accent is really fake to everyone's ears. :)
Arcturus: Hey, it's our database guy!
MrManley: That was something of a riot....
Raptor: KT grey has a very cute accent IMO
SpaceDrake: That's kinda the point Raptor
KyleHebert: is KT grey really british?
Slavik_CC: drake, you read the hellsing manga?
JK: I love when people tell me about the fake British
actors :)
SpaceDrake: God, don't I wish.
SpaceDrake: They haven't translated it yet though, so not
yet.
Nijhazer: Hellsing manga is coming out here this year.
Arxane: Dark Horse licensed the Hellsing manga
Huntressfan: I made it this time...
SpaceDrake: I want to though.
Slavik_CC: allen mentioned that KT used to live in UK,
right?
SpaceDrake: WHAT?!?!!?!
Arxane: As well as Trigun
JK: No, K.T. isn't a Brit, but she spent a long time all
around Europe.
SpaceDrake: GLORY BE
Slavik_CC: the hellsing manga 0wnzerz
Nijhazer: Yup, Trigun and Kenshin mangas this year
Kiggy: hello HF
BizarroDX: Hellsing manga is sooooooooo good!
AllenDivers: mediablasters didn't have the rights to air
kenshin.. they were approached by cartoon network, and
since the tv rights weren't in their contract they
introduced CN to I belive the parent company is Sony in
Japan for kenshin.. and again, all mediablasters asked
was to use their dub on the air
Arxane: And "The RIng" manga
SpaceDrake: When is issue 1 due out?
KyleHebert: they'r compiling, spacedrake
Slavik_CC: late fall of this year.
BizarroDX: Trigun is also the king of manga!
Raptor: the ring maanga?
Geoduck: JK: Vital question of the day...is KT Gray as
cute as she sounds? ^_-
* SpaceDrake starts saving pennies
Arxane: Drake: Don't know, but it should sometime this
year
SpaceDrake: Oi
JK: Geo: More :)
Shinobi: LOL geo
* SpaceDrake beats Geoduck with the Oversized Anime Mallet
AllenDivers: Yeah, KT's accent would often sound a bit
forced, but fairly good for a non-native.. I mentioned
in a column that she lived there for a while
Raptor: agrees with geo
* Nijhazer changes topic to 'Accents: When and why to use
them'
AllenDivers: man, I've gotten lost in this conversation
* Geoduck recovers from the malleting in the manner of Ryo
Saeba
JK: BRB
Clark: Allen: I'm pretty sure that MB is also handling a
lot of the logistics of it. The masters and the credits.
Nijhazer: OK, topic!
Shinobi: what topic?
* SarahWolf-brb is now known as SarahWolf
Shinobi: there's a topic?
Nijhazer: Many shows have characters with accents. Some
seem obvious, some are not so obvious.
Kiggy: wb SarahW
AllenDivers: yeah, they are doing that as well, clark,
but the gist was they couldn't negotiate the actual deal
to get kenshin on CN
Arcturus: The topic is SarahWolf
SarahWolf: YAY!
SpaceDrake: Obviously if you have an exotic setting
(Hellsing/Noir/et. al.) then they're practcially a
requirement for a good dub
Slavik_CC: it depends on what country the character(s)
from?
Nijhazer: What should determine when accents are used?
What's a good example of an accent used for seemingly
inexplicable reasons?
Raptor: Koharu in P9 has a nice accent
Monica: Geroge's accent in Noir rocks
SpaceDrake: BRB, Nature calls!
Clark: Allen: I heard it differently from John Sirabella,
but whatever. ;)
Geoduck: I saw the character listing for Cyborg
009...that's a show that's going to have a lot of
accents.
AllenDivers: my whole point with Last Exile is, many of
the character names are German in nature, so do you do
german accents for many of the characters?
Monica: I didn't know it was him
Slavik_CC: is koharu in P9 has an osaka accent?
JK: L/R is going with British accents since it's supposed
to be a British-like country.
Nijhazer: After all, many characters in anime are
Japanese yet in English, are not dubbed with "Japanese"
accents.
* SarahWolf is now known as SarahWolf-afk
Nork22: slavik: it's Tosa :)
Nijhazer: And in Full Metal Panic, there are KGB members,
some with Russian accents and some without.
Monica: Nij true dat
AllenDivers: hehe.. clark, you probably heard a different
version than I did of course.. that's how it was relayed
to me at the akon mediablasters panel
KyleHebert: with blue gender, my character, Seno Miyagi
was only british cuz i suggested it to the director. i
have no idea what the intention was in Japanese.
Shinobi: yeah, if the series focus on a location then the
accents should be used at least for background Aka walla
work
Slavik_CC: that's a tough one, allen. the last exile
universe could be very different from ours. so, accents
or no accents, it doesn't really matter...
Clark: Allen: Who was at the panel?
Nijhazer: And then there's Cynthia Crantz in Yu Yu
Hakusho...
Shinobi: Monica: agreed Georges accents ROCK! in Noir
KyleHebert: like in star wars.........british: evil
KyleHebert: lol
MrManley: And, don't get me started in Corsicans with
American accents, but that still pronounce Bouquet "
KyleHebert: ;p;
Geoduck: Cyborg 009 characters: http://forums.animeondvd.c
om/shownested.php?Cat=&Board=generalanimeforum&Number=741
87&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
Raptor: well i'd prefer them to at least have some
accents then to all exactly the same all the time
AllenDivers: well, why even do accents.. does it really
help add that extra bit of flavor, or is it flame bait?
MrManley: "boo-queh"
Monica: :P
Kiggy: George: LOL
Otakuman: Ahhh yes Cynthia
BizarroDX: I liked Cynthia is YYH
KyleHebert: nij.....cynthia dropped the accent (for the
best)
Nijhazer: Yup, but I still don't know why it was used
Otakuman: Botan RULZ
KyleHebert: yes botan rox
Nijhazer: That one was just puzzling to me
KyleHebert: understood
AllenDivers: hehe.. I didn't get the name clark
KyleHebert: me too
Slavik_CC: in any alternate universe, anything goes. :)
SpaceDrake: Once again I am the return
Monica: I think if an accent is done well it should be
done. If it's so so then no way
Raptor: you mean Boten. i love her accent :(
Shinobi: I never noticed an accent by Botan to be honest
Clark: Allen: 'kay. Just wondering.
Nijhazer: Personally my take on it is thus...
* lightningcount has quit IRC (Quit: )
Nijhazer: Accents should be used to differentiate
characters according to the culture of the show.
Shinobi: right on the money Monica!
Kiggy: Mon Mon Pvt Msg
AllenDivers: hehe.. no problem clark, I understand.. if
it helps, he was a sleepy looking guy with short dark
hair
SpaceDrake: I think Nij has it down.
Nijhazer: If the majority of the characters are Japanese,
speak normally. Use an accent to differentiate a
character who is supposed to sound different in the way
he/she speaks.
Arxane: Nij: sounds like a winner to me
SpaceDrake: If the situation calls for it (again,
Hellsing/Noir) then roll with it.
Clark: Allen: Hm, must be one of the new sales reps that
got hired after I left.
SpaceDrake: Otherwise, it can be too risky (or COSTLY...
I don't want to think about how much Victoria Harwood
cost Pioneer)
Arxane: I gotta go. I'm being pestered to get off
Nijhazer: So in the case of Last Exile, if the culture is
German, speak normally for characters who are German. I
haven't seen that show though.
Nijhazer: Thanks for coming by, Arx!
SpaceDrake: Later Arx
AllenDivers: hehe.. clark, you know how it goes.. they
will tell the press one thing, and they talk differently
to other "insiders" and old friends
MrManley: That kind of takes me back to NOIR - where the
main characters, regardless of nationality, speak in
character, but without accents; and supporting
characters, like my 50 something dead guys, had
idiolects of some kind
Arxane: No problem. Cya ya'll next time
BizarroDX: Bye Arx
Shinobi: that's certainly a good way to look at it Nij
* Arxane has quit IRC (Quit: )
AllenDivers: the names of last exile characters are very
german in nature
Clark: Allen: Shhh... ;)
Shinobi: so what is your body count in Noir George?
Monica: I think a good example is Vic in FMP he is
foreign (aka not Japanese) but he only uses an sccent
when talking to the Japanese girls. It just lets you
know that he is foreign without a harsh accent.
SpaceDrake: That'll be another "pester JK" question: how
much did Pioneer have to shell out for all those Brits
in Hellsing?
Nijhazer: Yup, good example by Monica.
Slavik_CC: then again, it's up on the original producer
(gonzo). gonzo has been pushing for anime for the
worldwide audiences.
Nijhazer: Another good example is BAV.
SpaceDrake: True Mon
AllenDivers: and well, some of the uniforms are very old
european in nature.. ti would add a lot of flavor to
have those deep european accents
Nork22: agrees with monica
JK: Drake: No comment :)
AllenDivers: hehe... oh, right clark :-)
Shinobi: Vic's accent was great. In a funny way, which is
what i think the purpose was in the first place
SpaceDrake: Which is why Gonzo is the rawk.
MrManley: Adding the body count from Volume 6 a couple
nights ago, an even 6 dozen, I'm pretty sure
Raptor: gonzos great
SpaceDrake: And COME ON JK...
MrManley: :)
SpaceDrake: Inquiring, obsessive fanbois want to know
Slavik_CC: JK: regardless, it's great to bring bill
morgan into hellsing :D
Monica: Yay! I killed you! A lot!
SpaceDrake: Bill Morgan - Fargason, right?
Raptor: :)
AllenDivers: hehe.. monica, brings a whole new meaning to
going postal at work
MrManley: Word up... Monica got to kill me with a pick
axe... awesome stuff
Monica: Yup I agree Allen :)
Shinobi: geez Monica: you can't kill george once, you
have to do it over and over. That's cruel!
Nork22: ewww icepick
Kiggy: heheheh
Raptor: (gasps) bill morgan. hes great too
SpaceDrake: Still haven't gotten the whole cast down pat
yet, to my shame
Otakuman: LOL
AllenDivers: who played the role of the guy she kills
with his own sunglasses?
Monica: I think I've killed every man at ADV
JK: Glad you like him Slavik :)
AllenDivers: hehe.. monica, the mankiller
MrManley: No no no... BIG pick axe... like the size of
one you dig in the ground with
Shinobi: lol Monica!
Kiggy: Monica is Da Killah
Monica: Woo Hoo!
MrManley: Nice, squishy sound....
SpaceDrake: OK, HERE'S a topic, if I may.
AllenDivers: hehe... bring out the hall & oates
BizarroDX: Monica Battosai
Otakuman: How the heck you csn kill someone with shades??
Shinobi: that'll look great on a resume
SpaceDrake: Nij, may I?
Shinobi: watch Noir and find out otakuman!
Monica: It's possible Otakuman!
AllenDivers: oh, you haven't seen that episode of noir
then, have you otakuman
Raptor: lol @ shinobi
AllenDivers: and neckties.. I will never wear a necktie
around monica
Monica: Yay!
MrManley: :D
Nork22: lol
Slavik_CC: i don't know, but you can snap the shades in
half and try to slice somebody with it ;P
Shinobi: just don't let Monica with arms reach of you
SpaceDrake: Deadly neckties. We all know how that goes.
Monica: My fave is the ID card
MrManley: There... big sister knows...
Shinobi: actually that won't work either
SpaceDrake: I so need to get Noir.
Monica: :P
AllenDivers: monica, do you want some popcorn?
Monica: YES!
Shinobi: lol
Monica: :P
SpaceDrake: But unfortunately I first need that thing
called a "job."
Huntressfan: Monica's just killing people as revenge for
dying lots of times in excel saga
Nork22: lol
BizarroDX: lol
Shinobi: Monica: the ID card is my fave too!
SpaceDrake: Which doesn't seem to exist here in Northern
VA.
MrManley: Now, that's a good call
Monica: Ha! That's true Huntress
AllenDivers: see, her karma needed to even out
Kiggy: Killed someone with ID Card? Brrrrrrrrr!
Raptor: nor in southern florida :(
Nork22: got to kill anyone with a plushie yet? :p
Monica: So are we still on accents?
* Kiggy hasn't seen NOIR yet. No $$$
Monica: Not yet Nork ;)
Kiggy: :(
Shinobi: Actually it was for having to do ep 26 in Excel
Saga. Comon Monica you can admit it!
AllenDivers: monica, have you had to do a difficult
accent yet?
Monica: You wanna apply?
Huntressfan: Same here, Kiggy... :(
SpaceDrake: I was going to switch topics, I'm just
waiting for Nij's OK..
* SarahWolf-afk is now known as SarahWolf
SarahWolf: the only thing from ADV i've seen is RahXephon
Monica: No Allen I have yet to do any accents. I would
like to :)
* Kiggy highs 5 HF
AllenDivers: the members of my anime club want me to show
episode 26 at the school.. uh, can't do that
Raptor: I'll be back
* Raptor has left #dubreview
JK: Just propose you topic Drake: Then we'll decide if
it's worthwhile.
AllenDivers: we would lose our room
Shinobi: lol Allen
Kiggy: Raptor is the Terminator???
SpaceDrake: Allen, I don't think my COLLEGE club could do
that.
SpaceDrake: Anyway.
AllenDivers: spacedrake, this is a college club
Monica: Ha! No ep 26 for the kiddies
SpaceDrake: Yep
SpaceDrake: Anyway.
Kiggy: ES ep 25 can look like a final ep
Shinobi: I tell you, Monica's little killing spree was
revenge for ep 26 in Excel!
Monica: Ha!
SpaceDrake: We've come a loooong, looooooooooong way
since the early days of dubbing, when the janior down
the hall would be pulled into the recording studio to do
a main role.
Nork22: where's the ES 26 tame version when u need it
Shinobi: lol
SpaceDrake: However, during that time (the 80's) there
were some real gems that got lost to bad dubbing.
AllenDivers: hehe.. I have a new goal for myself.. to do
wala work for every studio in the anime business
SpaceDrake: Are there any shows that you think should be
RE-dubbed and done justice?
Monica: What are you saying Drake? Janitors make good vas
;)
Slavik_CC: redub sailor moon!
Otakuman: LOL
Nork22: redub cardcaptor sakura!!!
AllenDivers: hehe.. column writers make good va's too..
at least that's what I'll keep saying
Kiggy: YES!!!
SpaceDrake: Yes to redubbing CCS.
JK: I use Janitors for VA's and have my VA's clean the
toilets. :)\
SpaceDrake: Under the REAL NAME TOO.
SpaceDrake: JK you ebil bastarde.
Shinobi: lol JK!
AllenDivers: jk, is that union work or non-union?
Slavik_CC: but keep some sailor moon dub VA's in the
redub, some of them are great.
Shinobi: that'll show 'em!
Monica: There ya go JK! Make those silly actors work!
* Kiggy shudders when he thinks of the butchery Harmony
Gold made of Captain harlock and Millenium Queen
Monica: Mental note: don't work for New Gen unless you
wanna clean toilets
Shinobi: There are definitly series that could use a good
re-dub
AllenDivers: the real question there drake is, is there
any money to be made by redubbing those old series
Kiggy: LOL Monica
Monica: :P
KyleHebert: lol
Shinobi: lol Monica
AllenDivers: you know I've heard of paying your dues, but
that's ridiculous
Geoduck: Doug Smith could work for JK!
SpaceDrake: Personally, I say bring back the core cast of
Slayers, scrap the entire supporting cast (including the
AWFUL David Moo) and redub the whole thing. And have He
That Is Crispin do Zelgadis.
Kiggy: Moo!
Shinobi: Ture Allen. I'm not sure if there is money on a
lot of those series redubbed
Arcturus: I like David Moo's Xellos.
AllenDivers: .. and just remember minna, dub critics work
cheap... like for free
SpaceDrake: Alas Allen, good point.
Monica: I think they should redub Voltron
Monica: :)
Nork22: sherry lynn as Sakura Kinomoto :D
Otakuman: Look what Sandy Frank did to Batte Of The
Planets, New Dub on the way
Kiggy: LOL!
Geoduck: If GoldenBoy hasn't lied to me, Doug Smith
LOOOOOVES toilets!
AllenDivers: hehe.. voltron rules
Kiggy: Voltron was cool
Monica: Yes Allen...yes it does
SpaceDrake: But am I the only one who would pay through
the NOSE for properly dubbed CCS?
Shinobi: Monica just wants to hear Lance again
Monica: :)
Shinobi: :)
AllenDivers: CCS is new enough that it could make money
redubbed
Otakuman: David Moo Rulz As Xellos (That Is A Secret)
Otakuman: LOL
Shinobi: I agree CCS is a sereis that'd do well redubed
Monica: Isn't CCS pretty recent though?
SpaceDrake: I loathed David Moo.
Geoduck: SpaceDrake: I've already paid through the nose
for undubbed CCS. It would have to be unbe-freaking-lieva
ble to get me to buy it again.
Shinobi: sure is Monica
Otakuman: Why SD?
SpaceDrake: He sounded too whiny and most of all he
sounded like he didn't fvsking CARE.
* Nijhazer returns
SpaceDrake: At least in Season 2.
SpaceDrake: Granted I've not seen TRY... yet.
AllenDivers: around the same time as angelic layer (ccs
that is)
Kiggy: GeoD: maybe the ANime Network coulod air the
redubbed CCS
Monica: Oh wow
Clark: Aren't there some CCS OVAs or movies?
Geoduck: I thought David Moo was hilarious as Xellos. He
sounded like he enjoyed being obnoxious. Which Xellos is.
SpaceDrake: And yeah, CCS is pretty recent.
Geoduck: Clark: There are two movies.
Geoduck: No OVAs.
Otakuman: Geo: true
SpaceDrake: Yet,
Monica: The Anime Network...DEMAND your anime!
Nork22: no word on second movie yet
Kiggy: yes!
AllenDivers: the thing though is, who has the rights to
any english language version.. I'm sure nelvana is
sitting on those, and much like harmony gold, won't
release any of the rights they have
SpaceDrake: But IIRC CCS did GANGBUSTERS in Japan.
Clark: Geoduck: Thought so.
* Kiggy hits the AN site again
Shinobi: I'm sending a letter to my cable company this
week for the Anime Network!
Nijhazer: DEMAND your anime is not something you have to
tell a lot of people to do.
MrManley: I pounded DirecTV, DishNetwork and Time
Warner....
SpaceDrake: Ergo I doubt we've seen the last of it.
Monica: Yay! You know you can do that on the site right
Shin?
Nijhazer: There's a thread on AoD calling for a boycott
of ADV because FMP is seven discs. Probably the
fifteenth boycott this month.
Monica: Ha Nij
Geoduck: It would be dishonest of me to lobby for Anime
Network, because there's no way that I'm going to pay
for digital cable.
JK: Unless it's a basic satelite channel, I'm not paying
for it.
Shinobi: Yep Monica! Where do you think the letter comes
from?
Monica: Somebody's always boycotting ADv...oh well...
AllenDivers: CCS has had its day in the sun.. CLAMP is
off on other worlds now, so don't expect anything new
CCS wise.. now of course, Tsubasa is another story
Monica: Yay shin!
Otakuman: Njih: Oh PHLEEEZE, Boycott ADV cz of That??
KyleHebert: and Monica IS the voice of the Anime Network
promos
BizarroDX: ah, boycotts, a losers errand
Slavik_CC: silly petitions
Otakuman: Thats Ridiculous!!
Clark: JK: It's not like you need more new anime, though,
right? You've got enough sitting on your desk. ;)
Nork22: FMP too good to be boycott
SpaceDrake: ADV does put too few episodes on their discs.
AllenDivers: hello pretty japanese girls
Geoduck: It's cheaper and more convenient for me to rent
anime DVDs on Netflix.
SpaceDrake: But hey, we all bought up NGE at 3 eps a disc.
Nijhazer: Otakuman, Well why not? People there wanted to
boycott AnimEigo (an extremely low-margin company)
because the opening sequences were optional.
Nork22: Let me hear you say please sargeant weber
JK: Clark: True :)
Nijhazer: Opening sequences on KOR that is.
Shinobi: AAOD and there boycotss. Sheesh!
Monica: Vic rocks
Otakuman: Really
Monica: AOD...
Otakuman: /
Otakuman: /?
Nijhazer: Geo: Last I checked Netflix didn't have much of
an anime selection. Have they improved?
Shinobi: Vic rakku
MrManley: Boycott... I've got something they can boycott,
right HERE!
AllenDivers: vic did a few roles for funimation
* Kiggy has demanded his anime for the 3rd or 4th time
Slavik_CC: AoD has a lot of extremely anal people :P
Geoduck: Nijhazer: Yeah.
AllenDivers: ack.. I was supposed to meet vic at akon..
crap, I knew I forgot something
Otakuman: LOL @ George
JK: People Boycott for some of the lamest reasons.
Shinobi: lol George!
AllenDivers: well, didn't forget, just couldnt' find him
Geoduck: The only company I'd consider boycotting would
be Manga...and I just bought Read Or Die, so I'm a lousy
boycotter.
Monica: Yeah Allen...They have Kiddy Grade...I may have
to drive ;)
Shinobi: don't feel bad Allen. Vic wasn't at A-kon for
long
Monica: LOL Geo
AllenDivers: hehe.. let me know monica.. I'll drive
Otakuman: Geo: I hear theROD dub is decent
Monica: :)
Nijhazer: Well, Geo, at least ROD was a good release; no
need to boycott that one.
* Geoduck LOOOOVES the ROD dub.
KyleHebert: we're not starting on Kiddy Grade just yet
Arcturus: Otakuman: I'm reviewing that one now.
Shinobi: lol monica
Slavik_CC: the ROD dub wasn't too bad, IMHO.
MrManley: You know a Manga title I'd love to get and
redub... Mad Bull I would LOVE to be Sleepy Estes
Otakuman: Cool
Nijhazer: Mad Bull...
AllenDivers: I'm trying to get an audition with funi..
for research purposes of course
Nijhazer: Man, that one is old school
Shinobi: that be cool George
Nork22: shudders at name Mad Bull
Nijhazer: Up there with Dominion Tank Police
Slavik_CC: jaxon lee, amanda, and crispin rules in ROD
MrManley: Not that I think they did a bad job... I just
wanna be Sleepy
Shinobi: lol Allen!
Nijhazer: One of the first anime titles I ever saw.
SpaceDrake: BTW...
Otakuman: And Kimberly Yates
Otakuman: LOL
SpaceDrake: "Speaking of which, ADV dropped the ball with
a great opportunity to give Rial more lines. In the
Japanese version of Noir, because Kirika had so few
lines in the show, the director decided to give Kirika’s
voice actress the part of Prince Myshkin, the cat found
in episode six. ADV rather chose to give the cat stock
sound-effects. It’s nothing really important to the
overall dub, but it would’ve been at the very least
amusing to hear
Geoduck: You know, I'd be willing to pay triple the price
to Manga if they were to go to the effort of dubbing
Gunbuster.
AllenDivers: hehe.. I've got my little toe in the door...
wala work
MrManley: I'm gonna kill the F(*&*(&$ Capricorn!!!!
SpaceDrake: Comment, Monica?
MrManley: Oh yeah... I'd love that
AllenDivers: if its kiddy grade and monica gets a role,
then she can kill me too
Monica: They used Matt's cats for Myshkin :)
Monica: For eal
MrManley: MOMIJI!
Otakuman: Yay
Otakuman: Meow
Shinobi: Monica can kill me as much as she wants! :)
Monica: Good trivia
SpaceDrake: Hehe. But you as a cat.
SpaceDrake: That would have been entertaining.
Monica: Yeah I love playing critters
JK: Taliesin did Wakaba the cat in NieA. No stock
footage.
Nork22: if it's a talking cat, ill buy it :P
AllenDivers: all right spacedrake.. go take a cold shower
SpaceDrake: What?
MrManley: Or was I supposed to reveal the name of the
cat... is that like an industry secret or something
Slavik_CC: no cats mooing?
MrManley: ?
Monica: I play lots of critters in Those Who Hunt Elves II
Nijhazer: "You saved my life Tick. And for that I shall
be your loyal pet forever."
SpaceDrake: I contend I'm the LEAST perverted man in this
room.
AllenDivers: hehe.. nice ref nij
Geoduck: monica: Do you get stripped? ^_-
* SpaceDrake glowers at all of the guys drooling over Kira
in panties
AllenDivers: geo
